Measuring Attitudes Toward PrisonersA Psychometric AssessmentUniversity of Edinburgh
Autonomous University of Barcelona
University of Edinburgh This study empirically examined attitudes toward prisoners in Spain using Melvin et al.'s (1985) Attitude Toward Prisoners Scale (ATPS). In order to examine the replicability of the results obtained by Melvin et al. with United States prisoners, the ATPS was administered to four groups of criminal justice professionals in Spain. The results revealed a factorial structure consistent with the one described in the original study. High test-retest and internal consistency reliability coefficients were found. Evidence of validity was also shown by using construct-related and criterion-related validation procedures.
