Connecticut Department of Corrections Existing prison programs fail to provide opportunities for the offender to participate in meaningful democratic experiences. The Niantic Project sought to create a prison environment which would avoid the pitfalls of conventional correctional settings. The goals of the proposed alternative were to create a setting which would actively stimulate the sociolegal thinking of the inmates involved and would aid inmates in leading successful lives following release from the institution.
