Locus of Control Within Subgroups in a Correctional PopulationUniversity of Connecticut
University of Washington, School of Medicine The present study was designed to investigate locus of control (I-E) among various subgroups in a correctional population. Using a procedure designed to minimize demands for socially desirable responses, 45 adult male prisoners were tested individually. Consistent with earlier research, white inmates and those active in social organizations scored more internally than others. However, in contrast with the available literature, drug users were found to be significantly more external (F = 9.13, df = 1, 41, p <.01). The drug use results were interpreted in terms of the presence or absence of demands for socially appropriate test responses.
