Privacy and Corrections

A Social Learning Approach

The present study is an examination of the effects of various correctional environments on inmate perceptions of privacy. To investigate such effects, a social learning approach was proposed. Consistent with this approach, instruments were developed to assess inmate values of privacy and inmate expectancies for privacy. The instruments were in turn administered to samples of inmates from six correctional facilities representing a variety of institutional conditions. As indicated by the analyses comparing institutions, inmate expectancies for privacy varied across settings whereas inmate values did not. On the basis of these results, the utility of approaching privacy from a social learning perspective is suggested.
